Authour's Club:
Tonight was perfect! It was the first meeting of our Author’s club. Five showed up, including me, and it was – perfect!
Between the five of us we covered all the bases in writers: First there was me, a self published youth novelist.
Then there was David the creator of a comic book that will hopefully be hitting the stores soon (and from what he’s told me of it – it’s going to kick!)
Alex, self dubbed “Writebrit” came; she’s written and self published a self help book entitled: ‘Lose your weight not your freaking mind!!’ It’s been out for two years and she’s now buzzed about writing something new.
Graeme Connell came; he’s working on his experience from an expedition to Antarctica – putting it all into a handy book for family, friends and the general public. He was a wealth of information as he also owns and runs a printing company.
Lastly, but not least was Tracy from ‘The Write Support’ a personal friend of mine, and my editor. She’s been thinking about writing and in the last week her story finally came to her.
We met and did the common uncomfortable introductions then we dove right into our biggest passion – our writing! Suddenly those weird idiosyncrasies that we struggle with became an ‘I’ve experienced that too!’ moment. We shared hurtles we’ve faced and came to find that some of them were common among us. And lastly we shared our personal experience and were able to give encouragement!
Everything I wanted of this group – here it was!
My favourite moment was when Alex mentioned something about her current story and David was able to give her an idea, an idea that between the five of us we were able to expound upon until Alex felt overwhelmed, but in a really good way. I can imagine that she’s gone off to write until her hand cramps!
David hit it on the head. As writers we are very solitary beings, unlike the other arts: music, painting, dance, there is no ‘groupings’ for us normally. But tonight we found community, commonality and camaraderie.
I believe that every writer needs this. I’ve always advised that we can’t write from a vacuum. We need to experience things otherwise we have nothing to draw upon to put into our stories. I’ve been searching for this and I just can’t put into words how happy I am to have found (created) it.
Thanks guys!
And if you are interested in joining us, we aren’t exclusive. Just CONTACT ME and I’ll give the info on our next meeting – for now it will be every two weeks. I can’t wait!
